Be a Mindful Shopper This Holiday Season

Deck the halls and light the lights—the holiday season is upon us! It’s the most festive time of the year, but it can also be one of the most stressful. It’s easy to get caught up in the frenzy and chaos of all the crowds, sales, emails, and SantaCons.

So how do you break out the holiday cheer and celebrate the parts of the season that really matter?

You become a mindful shopper by taking a moment to clear your mind, get organized, and look for brands and gifts that show you really care. You focus more on the community and people around you and less on the madness. Here are three tips for an enjoyable, mindful, and community-driven shopping experience:

Get organized.

It can be easy to get carried away when thinking about your loved ones and the wonderful gifts they’d enjoy. However, you can be more mindful this season by getting organized with your shopping list. Set clear expectations for yourself that are in line with your bank account. Know what you need to buy before heading out to the store, while still leaving a little room in your budget for those perfect, unexpected finds. This way you’ll be less tempted to spring for big, or unnecessary items, and you’ll be prepared to check gifts off your list while you’re out and about.

Shop local.

One of the greatest ways to support and encourage your community is to buy from local brands. If your town has a vibrant, creative, and hard-working community of makers, entrepreneurs, and artisans, start shopping with them this holiday season. You’ll probably find homemade, one-of-a-kind gifts you wouldn’t see in a big chain store. These types of gifts show how much you care about your loved ones, plus purchasing local stimulates the economy and encourages creativity.

Take a breath.

The holidays are truly the busiest time of year. The malls are packed, the roads are congested, and there are approximately 157 parties to attend. We often rush through the weeks leading up to them in such a haze that we can easily forget to enjoy the season. So this time, slow down. Take a breath. Remember that you don’t have to rush, and that the holiday season is all about people. Make a date with a friend to go shopping and turn it into a time of connection. Spend your time doing the things you enjoy with the people you love.

Then take a moment for yourself. Book a massage or facial when your family thinks you’re out shopping (don’t worry, we won’t tell). Take a fitness class or hit up the cosmetics counter for a makeover and buy something for yourself. Sip a hot cocoa while staring at the snow for all we care. However you like to treat yourself, just make sure you do—the holidays are a time for self-reflection, too.
